What does true scientific research leadership in Africa look like?

Beyond leading cutting-edge science, can African research leaders advocate for greater domestic investment to make science-based solutions central to development financing? Many argue that scientists should “just focus on the science,” but limited funding makes this difficult. Relying solely on foreign funding is no longer sustainable.

In a conversation with Prof. Sam Kinyanjui , Director of IDeAL at the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme, these issues were explored. A key takeaway: Africa cannot compete globally without applying science, technology, and innovation—but achieving this requires a vision of African scientists solving Africa’s challenges, supported by adequate resources.

The pressing question: how can domestic financing for research be mobilized?
