Why climate science must sit at the heart of forestry’s future

As climate patterns continue to shift, forestry can no longer rely on historical data alone to plan for the future. Changing rainfall patterns, intensifying heat extremes and increasingly localised climate risks are reshaping how we think about sustainable land management.

We’re proud to highlight Dr Yolandi Ernst (SSACAB’s co-PI), with the focus on climate change, who recently participated in a workshop exploring the growing role of climate science in forestry. In her thought-provoking article, Dr Ernst explains how climate modelling and high-resolution data are becoming essential tools for building climate-resilient forestry landscapes — helping protect productivity, livelihoods and long-term sustainability. Published in recognition of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the article also celebrates the vital role women play in climate research and applied STEM fields that influence real-world decisions and shape sustainable futures. Key takeaway: Climate-informed decision-making is no longer optional — it’s foundational to resilient forestry, stable rural economies and responsible land management. 📖 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dEryydNH

Dr Yolandi was also part of the delegate that was hosted from The University of Manchester (UoM) at the University of the Witwatersrand. The primary purpose of the visit was to explore potential areas of research collaboration and synergy between UoM and Wits. The programme featured visits to the Structured Light Laboratory in the School of Physics (hosted by Prof. Andrew Forbes) and the Wits Innovation Center (hosted by Letlotlo Phohole and Moses Mogotlane).
